IPL Auction At this time of the year, the cricket world eagerly anticipates the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction to see which players will attract high bids. The mini-auction occurs annually before the tournament, allowing franchises to reorganize their teams and fill any vacant positions. Before the mini-auction, IPL franchises have the option to release or retain players based on their requirements and performance in the previous season. This year, the auction is scheduled to take place in Dubai on December 19. On Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) published the list of players shortlisted by the 10 franchises for the auction.

1. Travis Head (Australia): Base Price: Rs 2 crore
Travis Head, who recently played a crucial role in Australia’s victory at the ICC ODI Men’s World Cup in India, is expected to generate significant interest at the IPL 2024 auction. With his aggressive left-handed batting style, Head possesses all the qualities that IPL teams seek in a player. He can launch an onslaught right from the first ball and boasts a wide repertoire of shots. In the World Cup, Head demonstrated great determination, making it challenging for bowlers to compete against him. The batting-friendly Indian pitches will only work in his favor, making his task even easier. Additionally, he can also contribute with some off-break bowling, which can be advantageous if spin-friendly conditions prevail.
2. Gerald Coetzee (South Africa) Base Price: Rs 2 crore
In the IPL, there used to be a high demand for all-rounders. However, since the introduction of the Impact Player last year – which allows teams to have an additional player alongside the playing XI – the demand has now shifted towards fast bowlers. Gerald Coetzee is the type of bowler that every IPL team would greatly value having. He possesses great speed, consistently bowling in the high 140kmph range, and he also delivers powerful bouncers. This enables him to take numerous wickets both early on and towards the end of matches. He was South Africa’s top wicket-taker at the World Cup and left a lasting impression with his aggressive bowling style. Additionally, this 23-year-old cricketer is also adept at T20 cricket, as he can effortlessly deliver yorkers and change his pace whenever necessary.
3. Rachin Ravindra (New Zealand) Base Price: Rs 50 Lakh
Rachin Ravindra, a New Zealand cricketer of Indian descent, made a lasting impression in the recently concluded World Cup. He emerged as the fourth highest run-scorer in the tournament, accumulating 578 runs in 10 matches. In addition to his batting prowess, the 24-year-old possesses excellent left-arm spin bowling skills, which increase his chances of attracting high bids at the auction. Ravindra’s playing style is both elegant and powerful, making him an attractive prospect for IPL franchises. Considering the tendency of teams to favor recent performances at auctions, it would not be surprising if Ravindra becomes one of the most expensive purchases.
4. Mitchell Starc (Australia) Base Price: Rs 2 crore
Mitchell Starc, Australia’s premier fast-bowler, is set to make his long-awaited return to the IPL after an absence of eight years. His last appearance in the tournament was back in 2015 when he represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Known for his exceptional skills across all formats of the game, Starc possesses the ability to swing the new ball in both directions and delivers it at an impressive pace. Given his wealth of experience, most IPL franchises would be eager to secure his services, regardless of the cost. However, Starc finds himself placed at number 28 on the auction list, which means that teams will need to allocate sufficient funds if they wish to acquire him. His inclusion would undoubtedly bolster any team’s bowling attack and inject much-needed aggression, particularly on the typically flat Indian pitches.
5. Shardul Thakur (India) Base Price: Rs 2 crore
Indian players are highly sought after at the IPL auction due to their near-certain inclusion in the playing XI. Shardul Thakur, an all-rounder, is one of the few current Indian players who will be up for bidding in the upcoming auction. Thakur has previously represented five different franchises and possesses extensive experience in the tournament. Despite his recent below-par performance as a bowler, his overall value could still generate significant interest and substantial bids. In addition to his pace bowling abilities, Thakur also has the potential to be a formidable batsman on any given day.
